A MAN has been charged with eight burglaries after allegedly posing as a policeman to con elderly people out of thousands of pounds.

Unemployed Elijah King, 31, of Meadow Lane, Wickford, was charged with burglaries in Friern Gardens, Southend Road, Belchamps Road, Third Avenue and Short Lane, all in Wickford, as well as Maldon Road in Margaretting, Oxney Mead in Writtle, and The Gardens, Doddinghurst.

The burglaries all took place between Tuesday, March 3, and Sunday, April 5. Four days after one of the incidents in Wickford, where £800 was stolen, a 94-yearold victim was found dead.

Other elderly people who have been targeted told the Echo the fraudster, who was wearing a wig and dressed smartly, pretended to be a policeman to gain entry into their homes. King is due to appear at court at a later date.
