WHETHER cheering at Wembley or huddled around a TV, Saturday’s match was a nerve-shredding experience for everyone linked with Southend United.

Being able to overcome the disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion just a few weeks ago is testament to the spirit and commitment of Phil Brown’s team.

If Blues had won promotion as they wanted at Morecambe, 20,000 fans would been deprived of an amazing day out at the home of English football.

With just seconds of a tense 120-minute game remaining, it looked like the Shrimpers’ season was going to be in vain.

But a remarkable few minutes later, there were wild celebrations – both inside Wembley and around Southend.

With the football team at the heart of the community, Saturday’s success will have a positive knock-on effect and will provide a feelgood factor across the town.

Business leaders are getting excited about the prospect of welcoming visiting fans to the town next season, and hope to encourage them to take a trip to the seaside while they’re here.

As uncertainty continues to surround the fate of United’s long-anticipated new stadium, it can only be hoped the success of the team on the pitch will help move the project forward.

But for now, fans can simply enjoy the summer and look forward to the prospect of two Essex derbies against Colchester next season!
