There are Christmas lights… and then there are 4D Christmas lights.

Shoppers in Southend will be treated to a spectacular “4D” Christmas-themed display projected onto the My Local building in the High Street, starting at 4.30pm on Saturday, December 5.

The shows will run until 8pm, with performances then running between from 4pm to 8pm for December 6 to 12, as part of Southend BID’s festive celebrations.

The display will feature fast-moving Christmas images with the building also appearing gift-wrapped and transformed into sweets, with the spirits of Christmas flying in front of and then through windows.

The fourth dimension will be provided by “snow canons” giving the appearance of a winter blizzard if the weather does not follow Dean Martin’s advice to let it snow.

BID manager Alison Dewey says “The unique multimedia, multi-sensory animated 4D experience is something really new for Southend and which we are all really excited about - I am sure it will bring lots of people to the town centre with their families to enjoy it for the week it is on display."

The Christmas lights are part of a day long Winter Extravaganza, which also includes “Carol-oke” hosted by Essex Radio’s Paul Lovett.

The High Street itself will also take on a Wizard of Oz theme, with a Yellow Brick Road running throughout the High Street, and Dorothy, Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, Munchkins and the Wizard appearing courtesy of Nevendon Manor Events from 11am.

There’s also a chance to meet Santa and his reindeer, near the Royals Shopping Centre, at the top of Pier Hill, and take a selfie with members of the “Royal family” inside The Royals.

The lookalikes of Prince William, Kate and the Queen will be greeting subjects between 1.45 and 3.45pm on the day.

BBC Essex will be broadcasting live from The Royals Shopping Centre between 12-2pm with Sadie Nine.
