DOUBLE Olympic champion Max Whitlock was given a hero’s welcome on his return to Basildon on Friday.
Hundreds of fans turned up to see Whitlock back at the South Essex Gymnastics Club, based at Basildon Sporting Village, in Cranes Farm Road.
And the 23-year-old, who won gold on the floor and on the pommel in Brazil, told the Echo he was overwhelmed by the reception.
“It’s unbelievable to see so many people here and it’s certainly something I never expected,” said Whitlock.
“I’m very proud to be from this club and the facility here is one of the best in the world.
“I work so well with my coach Scott (Hann) and I need to say a massive thank you to everyone at the club as well as my family.
“Without all of their commitment I wouldn’t have won these medals.”
Whitlock was joined on his return to Basildon by club-mate Brinn Bevan who helped Great Britain finish fourth in the team final.
