A RODENT was spotted scurrying along a corridor inside Basildon Hospital, leaving a shocked patient “disgusted”.

Courtney Bailey, 25, from Basildon, has been in Horndon Ward since January following a paralysis attack which has left her unable to move from the waist down.

On Saturday, Courtney was horrified to see a large mouse scurrying around the corridor outside her room and raised concerns about the cleanliness of the hospital.

Basildon Hospital has stated it has regular pest control reviews and claimed the rodent likely accessed the building when equipment was brought inside from storage.

Courtney said: “It’s disgusting, the fact it was next to my ward was unsettling and it seemed careless, the cleanliness isn’t great and it feels like it was inevitable.

“It’s not just about how there was a mouse, there are so many risk factors – if I was there I would not have realised it was crawling up me or I could have trod on its diseased droppings.”

Videos show the rodent crouched in the hospital corridor, under a radiator.

Bosses at the hospital have stated the corridors, as well as all areas of the hospital are cleaned on a regular basis.

However Courtney has stated she will be submitting a complaint about the hospital.

She added: “My cleanliness level is second to none and I reported it to the estates, I understand that cleaners can’t get everywhere but the cleanliness is disgusting. I have pictures because it will be part of my complaints.

“It is disgusting and it is filthy and I don’t know what the cleaners do but I am a clean freak and it was disgusting.”

Chris Howlett, senior director of estates and facilities at the Mid and South Essex NHS Trust, which manages the hospital, said: “We have regular pest control reviews. Unfortunately, with doors continuously opening and equipment being brought in from storage, we very occasionally have rodents entering our buildings, especially during the winter months where they seek warmth.

“The corridors are cleaned on a regular basis as are clinical areas.”
