A WORRIED Basildon woman says she “almost had a heart attack” after discovering a 50m tall pylon could be built metres from her back garden.

Jane Nichols, 57, only discovered last week her back garden along the A127 in Dunton will have a 50m power line with 18 wires attached backing onto it.

The pylons are part of the National Grid Norwich to Tilbury energy network upgrade.

After attending the last Basildon consultation with National Grid on Thursday, Jane “almost had a heart attack” after seeing a CGI mock-up of what the pylon would look like over her house.

She is now determined to fight to see a change in the planned location.

She said: “I think the pylons need to be looked at and I think they need to be moved. I don’t want to look at these, I don’t want them over my house, and I have no idea if this will affect my health.

“The pylons make a buzzing sound, I don’t want to put up with that day and night and when I saw the 3D image of where it would be and what it would look like, I could have passed out.

“I thought people would come to blows in that meeting, there are also farmers across from me upset as it affects where they are grazing livestock and the position of their quite large fishing lake.

“I have been told that it doesn’t affect me, but it is in my back garden.

“It can be moved, it should be moved further down the line so it isn’t squarely in the middle of my garden and obscured.

“I have really got the worst deal and the worst view out of this.”

Jane is hopeful complaints raised at the consultation are productive and will cause a re-routing for the sake of her and her property.

Liam Walker, Project Director for Norwich to Tilbury, said: “Our plans are an essential part of The Great Grid Upgrade, the largest overhaul of our energy network in a generation.

“By developing this project, we will be able to connect new sources of low carbon energy to homes and businesses across East Anglia and Britain so that everyone has access to cleaner, more affordable electricity.

“This consultation is another part of our engagement with communities and stakeholders along the proposed route and we encourage people to share their views on the updated proposals.”
