SOUTHEND United midfielder Ryan Leonard is set to return to full training today and be fit to face Morecambe this weekend.

The 22-year-old, who was Blues’ player of the year last season, was expected to be out of action for at least three weeks after injuring his hamstring at Cheltenham Town.

But Leonard has recovered quicker than expected and manager Phil Brown expects him to be back in contention for Saturday’s game.

“Lenny has been back in light training for a few days and hopefully he will get the green light to join in with full training again today,” confirmed Brown.

“Hopefully he can get three or four good days work under his belt and I would expect him to be fit for the weekend.

“It’s good news that he’s back a little bit ahead of schedule because he’s an important player for us and he’s an athletic lad too so he shouldn’t have lost too much fitness either.”

However, Leonard will face a fight to force his way back in to the starting line-up.

Gary Deegan, Conor Clifford and Jack Payne have all shone in midfield so far this season, while Will Atkinson is also attempting to force his way back in to the team.

And Brown is therefore facing another selection headache.

“These are the type of problems you want and we’re certainly very strong in that area of the pitch,” said the Blues boss.

“It’s good to have so many options and it will stand us in good stead.”

Michael Timlin will soon also be pushing for a recall as he continues his way back to full fitness after a suffering dislocated elbow during pre-season.

Centre-back Cian Bolger is now available after recovering from a thigh problem and so too is striker Barry Corr after getting over a neck injury.

David Worrall has now also recovered from flu, leaving Ben Coker as the only remaining long term injury.

“The injuries are clearing up and they are on the way behind us now,” said Brown.

“Tims is making good progress and he already thinks he should be on the bench but he’s not ready for that just that.

“However, it’s good to have the players back fit and to have as many options as possible.”
