SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown is backing his strikers to come good, starting with tomorrow’s clash with Bury at Roots Hall.

Blues have hit the back of the net just once in their last four outings and have scored fewer goals than any other team in the top 16.

But Brown still believes his forwards are capable of turning things around in front of goal.

“We have strikers at the football club who are good enough to score goals at this level it’s just about them finding their feet and their form,” said Brown.

“You have to be brave when the chances come your way and that will be key tomorrow.

“But if we can relax and stay calm then goals will come because we are creating the chances.

“We just have to stick at it, remain focused and retain our beliefs because if we do that and keep on making these opportunities then the wheels will turn in our favour.”

Brown added that he had made little progress in his pursuit of signing a new striker on loan.

The Blues boss also revealed he had considered calling young strikers – Jason Williams, Isaac Layne and Ellis Brown in to the squad.

But he also feels it is important to stick by his current forwards.

“We’ve tried shuffling the pack and changing systems but maybe it’s consistency and continuity we need,” said Brown.

“If we were to bring one or two in then it would ruffle some feathers but we’re no closer to that happen than we were earlier on in the week.”

Blues’ lack of goals has seen them slip to 10th in the table without a win in their last four games.

In contrast, Bury sit fourth in the standings but were thrashed 5-0 at Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night.

And Brown is expecting a strong reaction from the Shakers.

“Bury will be smarting from a strange old week,” said Brown.

“They beat Portsmouth 3-0 last weekend but were then on the end on a 5-0 drubbing at Shrewsbury.

“I know their manager very well and he sets his teams out to be difficult to play against.

“But they do play football so hopefully that will make for a good spectacle and one we will win.”
