ROCHFORD Hockey Club finished the year in fine style with a fantastic 4-0 win against fellow title contenders Witham IV where they came out as 4-0 winners.

Rochford started the game well and the pressure paid off when James Morgan fired the ball in to the bottom corner after just five minutes.

The early goal settled Rochford as they took total control of the game with every player sticking to the game plan.

Morgan then grabbed a second, following some great pass and move play from the midfielders.

He received the ball with his back to goal and with some fancy stick skills turned and riffled home and unstoppable shot off the post leaving the Witham keeper stranded.

Rochford were now playing some great hockey and the only sour point of the half was losing skipper Andy Knight to a blood injury after he accidentally received a blow to the mouth from an opponents’ stick as he went in to make a tackle.

Despite this the team quickly reorganised themselves and was able to soak up a number of determined Witham attacks until the half time whistle blew.

The Rochford players came out in the second half determined not to let the lead slip as they had in the meeting between the sides earlier in the season and the reintroduction of skipper Knight helped to keep the players focus.

With the temperature plummeting towards freezing player of the match Morgan showed he was too hot to handle by grabbing his and the team’s third goal from the penalty spot after Witham were penalised for illegally stopping the ball on the line from a strike from Chris Williams.

To Witham’s credit they continued to look for a goal but in doing so started to become exposed at the back.

This was soon exploited by Rochford and, following a quick break, Rhys Durban played a neat ball to Danny Palmer who scored despite the Witham keeper initially making a good save.
