SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown is contemplating calling striker Jason Williams back from his successful loan spell at Chelmsford City.

The 19-year-old forward has bagged six goals in seven games in the Conference South with the Clarets.

And that form could well lead to the youngster being recalled to Roots Hall.

“Jason is doing really well for Chelmsford and I’m thinking about calling him back from there if I’m honest,” confirmed Brown.

“We have a 24 hour call back option on him and it’s something I may well look to do with the amount of games we have coming up over Christmas.

“Jason will have benefitted hugely from going to Chelmsford. He’s scored goals so he’s confidence is high and the advantage with him is that he’s physically already a man as well.

“He’s very strong and we could definitely need him so that’s why I’m thinking about bringing him back in.”

Blues play four games in the space of just 14 days during the busy festive period and remain keen to improve their goalscoring record.

The Shrimpers, who slipped to eighth in the League Two standings after losing 4-1 at leaders Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, have netted just 22 times in their 20 league games so far this season.

Only five teams have scored fewer goals in the division and they are all in the bottom seven places.

As a result Williams, who came through the youth ranks with Blues, could well now be returning in a bid to improve that record.

The youngster has made two substitute appearances for the Shrimpers’ first team but Brown will only bring him back if he is likely to play.

“I’m not just going to bring him back for the sake of it,” said Brown.

“I will only bring him back if he’s going to be in the squad but he’s still training with us and we’ve noticed a real difference in him.

“He’s bouncing around and is communicating much better now too.”
