SECOND half goals from Michael Timlin and Barry Corr saw Southend United get back to winning ways with a 2-0 triumph against Carlisle at Roots Hall.

After an uneventful first half, Timlin blasted Blues in front with a fantastic volley.

And Corr’s close range finish then ensured the Shrimpers got back on track having been beaten in their last two outings.

Struggling Carlisle were in contention early on and, with three minutes on the clock, Steven Rigg’s 12 yard header was easily saved to his right hand side by recalled Blues’ goalkeeper Ted Smith.

Carlisle soon went closer to scoring when Kyle Dempsey’s long range effort sailed just inches wide of the left post.

In reply, Blues soon hit back with Corr teeing up Joe Pigott but the striker’s left footed shot from a narrow angle was blocked by Carlisle goalkeeper Raphael Spiegel.

But, just before the break, Carlisle almost broke the deadlock when David Amoo’s right wing cross dropped to Dempsey and his 12 yard shot was brilliantly deflected by Luke Prosser just past the left post.

After surviving the scare, Southend went ahead five minutes in to the second half with Tmlin bagging his first goal of the season.

The midfielder reacted sharply on the edge of the penalty area after a goal-mouth scramble had been cleared in to his path and sent a scorching 20 yard volley flying in to the top right hand corner of the net.

Blues then wasted a fine chance to double their lead when Will Atkinson headed Ben Coker’s left wing cross over the crossbar and the wasted opportunity almost came back to haunt the hosts when the Cumbrians had strong shouts for a penalty turned down in the 65th minute.

Rigg was at the heart of the controversy has he charged in to the left hand side of the penalty area and appeared to be brought down by a sliding Smith.

However, referee Trevor Kettle opted to wave play on, much to the anger of the visitors.

Blues then made the most of the let off by doubling their lead in the 72nd minute, with Corr on target for the third game in succession.

The in-form striker was picked out Worrall’s far post header from Timlin’s deep left wing cross and made no mistake with an assured volleyed finish from close range.

Worrall and Ben Coker then went close to increasing Southend’s advantage in the closing stages but two goals were enough to secure a valuable victory for Phil Brown’s side.
