SOUTHEND United goalkeeper Daniel Bentley insists his long list of personal achievements will count for nothing unless the Shrimpers win promotion this weekend.

Bentley won fans’, community and players’ player of the year and was also selected in the PFA League Two team of the year having previously set two club records for clean sheets.

However, the Wickford based shot-stopper would happily swap all of that to guarantee promotion.

“It’s a huge honour for me to have won the award but it’s all about promotion for us all this season and that’s what I want most,” said Bentley.

“The awards and clean sheet records won’t really count for anything unless we do go up and would happily swap them for promotion.

“But it’s in our own hands now and we want to finish it off by winning at Morecambe on Saturday.

“We don’t want to be relying on results from anywhere else and we want to finish the job off ourselves.”

Bentley has kept eight successive clean sheets for the Shrimpers, the latest of which came against Luton Town on Saturday meaning he has still not conceded a home goal since October.

But Bentley’s opposite number Elliot Justham was to blame for Michael Timlin’s late winner after he allowed the midfielder’s long range shot to somehow squirm past him.

And that Bentley admitted he felt sorry for the former East Thurrock United shot-stopper.

“I know Elliot and he’s a top lad so it was hard to see him make a mistake like that,” said the 21-year-old.

“By all accounts he’s been doing well for them and he played well on Saturday apart from that mistake.

“From a selfish point of view it was good that we won the game but I made sure I spoke to him at the end to tell him not to dwell on the mistake and that he would be bigger and better as a result of it.”

Bentley celebrated the victory by attending the PFA awards night on Sunday where he was joined in the League Two team of the season by left-back Ben Coker.

And manager Phil Brown was delighted by the duo’s call ups.

“It’s magnificent for them both and for the football club as well,” said the Blues boss.

“I do reports on all of the games and so do Dave Penney and Graham Coughlan where we mark every player out of 10.

“For the last few weeks I’ve had to give Dan 10 for what he’s been doing and I think that really does show well he’s been playing.”
