SOUTHEND United’s assistant manager Dave Penney insists he is still in shock following the Shrimpers’ play-off success against Wycombe Wanderers.

Blues bagged an injury time equaliser deep into extra time before winning 7-6 on penalties.

And Penney still cannot quite believe what happened.

“I was in shock after the match and I probably still am because I just couldn’t believe how the game ended,” said the 50-year-old.

“We conceded an unlucky goal after having one disallowed, but to then win it after scoring with 20 seconds to go was just amazing.

“I think most people thought we were out of it, so to come back and win it was a mixture of relief and joy.”

The Shrimpers scored seven of their eight penalties to come out on top at Wembley.

And the spot-kick success came after Blues had been working hard on improving their penalties in training.

“We had been practising before the semi-final with Stevenage and before the final as well,” said Penney.

“We knew who were decent penalty takers and it was just a question of finding out who fancied it on the day.

“We knew who were taking them all the way down to number 10.

“It was all worked and they were all different class but you do feel for Wycombe because it’s a cruel way to lose and it’s a cruel place to lose as well.”
