SOUTHEND United legend Adam Barrett does not want the Shrimpers’ dramatic play-off win against Wycombe Wanderers to be his last appearance for the club.

The 35-year-old’s future at Roots Hall remains unclear as his contract at the club will soon expire.

But Barrett, who has played more than 300 games for Blues, is desperate to stay with his hometown club.

“I still feel as though I have an awful lot to offer and I want to stay,” said the popular defender.

“My fitness is fine and I’ve proved that by playing every minute of the last few matches, including two lots of extra-time so I really don’t see that being a problem.

“I also just love playing for this football club and it’s special for me every single time I pull on the shirt because it really means something to me.

“I also want to keep on helping the young players we have here so I’ll be sitting down with the manager and trying to sort something out.”

Barrett had originally announced he would retire at the end of the season before confirming he was reconsidering that decision after forcing his way back into the team.

The Benfleet-based defender ended the season in fine form and admitted a Wembley win would be a fine way to end his career should he not be offered another deal by the Shrimpers.

“I’m not going to sign for anyone else so if I don’t get a contract here then I will retire and what a game that would be to go out on,” said Barrett.

“Winning in the way we did at the home of English football was the best moment of my career.

“And if my last kick was firing home a penalty at Wembley then that wouldn’t be too bad a way to finish.”
