SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown insists goalkeeper Paul Smith could still have a future at the club.
The 35-year-old shotstopper was among a list of released players published on the club’s official website this afternoon.
But Brown believes Smith could still remain at Roots Hall.
“Where Paul is concerned it’s just a technicality saying he’s been released but really it means his contract is up and we haven’t spoken to him yet,” said Brown.
“I’m still planning to talk to Paul when I’m back in the country and there are all kind of possibilities which could come out of the chat, including a player coach role or some part time coaching.”
Smith joined the Shrimpers in August 2012 and has made 47 appearances for the club.
But he appeared just once last season and slipped to third in the pecking order behind Daniel Bentley and Ted Smith.
However, as was revealed in last week’s Echosport, defender Mads Ibenfeldt, midfielder Conor Clifford and striker Lee Barnard have definitely been released.
Youngsters Kane Farrell, Ellis Brown and Josh Banton have also departed without making an appearance for Blues’ first team.
