JESSICA Judd admits she will have to go back to the drawing board after a disappointing performance at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games.

Judd was hoping a 40,000 crowd at London’s Olympic Stadium on Friday might inspire her but she finished 11th in a high-quality 1500m field at the IAAF Diamond League event.

The 20-year old Canvey athlete has stepped up from 800m this season and finished third at the recent British Championships in Birmingham but she still needs to shave three seconds off her personal best to be running the times required for major championship selection.

Domestic rivals Laura Muir and Laura Weightman have both won Diamond League races this season and will lead a powerful British challenge at the World Championships in Beijing next month.

But Judd – who made the team two years ago – will be watching on television.

“I’ll try and put this behind me,” said Judd.

“It’s obviously brilliant to be here in this stadium racing but I’m in better shape than that and I don’t know what happened.

“I felt fine for the first 1200m but I just died at the end and I don’t know why. With 100m to go my legs went, and that’s tough to take.

“This was always going to be a transition year, after moving coaches and stepping up in distance.”

Meanwhile there was better success for Canvey runner Dale Clutterbuck who set a new personal best of 3:59.23 minutes in the Emsley Carr Mile on Saturday.

The middle distance runner was the first to admit that he was never going to challenge the leaders among the world-class field although he knows it is races like that which he intends to be a part of more often.

“It’s great to finally be getting selected to race in these big races but I think I’m another year off of competing with them,” said Clutterbuck, who eventually finished 14th.

“I found out what my weaknesses were in the race. I just need to be stronger.

“It was a bit of a breakthrough year for me in terms of really taking it seriously so another winter of taking it seriously, there should be a few more seconds in me.”
