SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown may be frustrated to have only made two signings so far this summer, but they both showed their worth in tonight’s 2-1 win against Charlton Athletic.

Anthony Wordsworth and David Mooney both netted against the Addicks at Roots Hall.

And that made it an unsuccessful return to the Shrimpers for last season’s play-off hero Joe Pigott who played the full 90 minutes in attack for the visitors.

After an even start to the game, former Charlton Athletic trainee Myles Weston lashed a low, 20 yard shot wide of the right post.

Moments later, Ryan Leonard fired over from 12 yards after good work down the left hand side from David Worrall but the Shrimpers remained on top and opened the scoring on the half hour mark with Wordsworth on target.

The impressive midfielder was picked out by a low, left wing cross from Worrall and unleashed a low, left footed volley which went through the legs of goalkeeper Nick Pope on its way into the back of the net.

However, Blues were in front for just three minutes when a quickly taken free-kick led to Mikhail Kennedy swapping passes with Karlan Ahearne-Grant before firing home into the back of the South Stand net.

After the break, Blues came close to regaining the lead when Wordsworth deflected right-wing free-kick was tipped over the crossbar by Charlton’s substitute goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov who replaced Pope at half-time.

With the Shrimpers continuing to attack, Cian Bolger’s header from Ben Coker’s inswinging free-kick was parried to safety by Mitov.

However, the home-side did eventually go back in front in the 57th minute, with a well worked goal from Mooney who netted with an impressive diving header.

The move began with Weston charging forward and having a well struck 20 yard shot parried out by Mitov.

But Worrall reacted well to the rebound and volleyed the ball back across the penalty area into the path of Mooney who made no mistake with a firm header from close range.

Mooney went close to scoring again in the 72nd minute when Weston’s through ball created another opportunity but his low shot was blocked by Mitov who then also reacted sharply to also keep out the striker’s follow up effort.
