JOE Ellul says he joined “big club” Billericay Town to win promotion, and he wants to get them on that trail with victory over his former club tomorrow.

The 26-year-old linked up with Billericay over the summer, having played an influential role for Enfield Town last term, as he led them to within a whisker of the Ryman Premier League play-offs.

But, having been a top target for Billericay manager Craig Edwards, Ellul says joining the club was an easy decision and he wants to play a key role as they strive to win promotion to the National League South.

Although he acknowledges Town need to improve on the two draws that have opened their season.

“Our start isn’t the greatest,” said the centre-half. “We know we have some very good players in this team, but we need a bit of time to gel and then we can really push on.

“We started really poorly against East Thurrock last weekend and were a different team in the second-half, while it was the other way round against Needham Market on Tuesday where we didn’t maintain our good start.

“For me things are going really well. I always wanted to join as Billericay are a big club who have played in the Conference, so it was a no-brainer.

“We should be playing at that level but we need to be beating teams like Needham. We think we can beat anyone and we always expect to win so we hope to show that tomorrow.”

Ellul admits the end of his time at Enfield was one of the hardest of his career, after the ongoing debacle at the club at the end of the campaign.

The north London club had secured a top five finish, but were deducted three points after the FA ruled they had fielded an ineligible player, meaning they were replaced by Met Police in the play-offs.

“It was horrible,” he said. “We thought we warranted our place but the FA ruled otherwise and there was little that could be done.

“I felt hard done-by, but we all had to move on and I now want to do my best here.”

Ellul also said he got a pleasant surprise when he celebrated George Beavan’s late equaliser at East Thurrock with the travelling supporters, as one fan planted a kiss on the new signing.

And the defender said he would return the favour if he scored.

“It was a nice surprise although it was definitely more than a peck,” he laughed. “If I get a goal I will give one back!”

l Town’s new addition Conor Hubble, formerly of Leiston, is expected to feature, along with Tom Derry.
