SOUTHEND United striker David Mooney wants his penalty at Coventry City to kick start his season.

Mooney bagged his first Blues’ goal in the 2-2 draw at Ricoh Arena on Monday night.

And the 30-year-old summer signing is now keen to start netting on a regular basis after initially being disappointed by his opening few displays for the Shrimpers.

“It hasn’t been the greatest of starts for me if I’m honest but I can try and build on this now,” said Mooney.

“It’s great to have got off the mark, it’s good for my confidence and hopefully I’ll get a few more goals now.”

Mooney fired home from the spot after Michael Timlin had been brought down in the box by Aaron Phillips.

But the former Leyton Orient forward was unsure where to place his penalty having missed a previous effort against the Sky Blues.

“I was caught in two minds because I missed a penalty at Coventry before and I knew their goalkeeping coach would’ve done some work on it, “said Mooney.

“I wanted to hit it down the middle but then he made me re-spot it so I just tried to whip it like I did against Braintree in pre-season.

“I ended up half doing both but the main thing was it went in and I’m just very grateful to get off the mark.

“We need to get some goals and thankfully we got two but we need to keep it going.”

Blues will next be in action this Saturday when they host Peterborough United at Roots Hall in a match which is also being screened live on Sky Sports.

And Mooney cannot wait to take to the field.

“After the way we played against Coventry, roll on Saturday, we’re really looking forward to it,” said the Irishman.

“Peterborough are a good team, but hopefully the crowd can get behind us and we can get in front.

"Scoring first is a big thing at this level and hopefully we can do that and go on to get the three points.

"That first win will be vital for us."
