SOUTHEND United goalkeeper Ted Smith has spoken of his pride after being called up into the England under 20 squad for the first time.

The former King John School pupil, who lives in Benfleet, has previously played internationally at both under-18 and 19 level.

But he was still not expecting to make the squad at the older age group for forthcoming friendlies against the Czech Republic.

“I don’t like to ever expect I’m in the squad because that would make it more disappointing if I don’t make the cut,” said Smith, 19.

“Thinking like that it’s always a huge bonus if I do get in and it was very pleasing to get the call up.

“It’s always a real honour to be told you’re representing your country and this is certainly no different.”

Smith joins Everton goalkeeper Russell Griffiths in a 20-man squad and will now be hoping to earn selection between the sticks.

Keith Downing’s side face the Czechs at the St George’s Park national football centre in Burton before also doing battle at Shrewsbury Town’s Greenhous Meadow ground on Monday.

And Smith is keen to show what he can do “Any game time is a bonus but it would be nice to get 90 minutes,” said the teenager.

“It’s going to be a real honour but I couldn’t do it without the support of my family and everyone at Southend United as well.”

Smith came through the youth system with the Shrimpers and made four appearances for the first team last season.

However, he has yet to appear so far this term due to the fine form of Daniel Bentley.

But Smith remains hungry to figure more regularly at Roots Hall.

“My aims for the season are to hopefully push for the shirt at Southend as much as I can,” said Smith.

“I need to play games this year.”
