SOUTHEND United’s Myles Weston wants the end of his 13 month goal drought to signal the start of a more prolific period.

Weston bagged his first goal since September 2014 when he opened the scoring in Tuesday night’s 3-0 win at Crawley Town.

And the 27-year-old now has his sights set on becoming a regular goal-getter, starting with Saturday’s clash against Port Vale at Roots Hall.

“I had gone too long without a goal so it was pleasing to get one at Crawley and now I want to get more,” said Weston.

“Hopefully I can go on a run and score in every game I play whether that’s starting or coming off the bench.

“I want to get on a roll and hopefully that can start on Saturday against Port Vale.

“We’re only two points from the play-offs and if we play like we did at Crawley then I’m sure we’ll narrow the gap.”

Weston is also keen to play a part in helping the Shrimpers come out on top at the weekend.

The striker, who can also play on the wing, ended a 39 match run without a goal, by scoring at the Broadfield Stadium.

And he now hopes to also be given the nod against Port Vale.

“Scoring at Crawley can’t have done my chances any harm but we will have to wait and see what the gaffer does on Saturday,” said Weston.

“It’s been a little bit frustrating for me in the last few weeks because everyone wants to be starting.

“If you don’t want to be doing that then you shouldn’t be playing football.

“But I was pleased to get the chance at Crawley and hopefully I can get a few more now.

“Then it’s up to me to try and make sure I take them.”

Weston certainly did that against Crawley.

And he was thrilled to see the ball hit the back of the net.

“It was a good ball through from Woody (Anthony Wordsworth) and I just tried to make sure I stayed composed,” said Weston.

“I could hear Jack Payne shouting for the ball but I couldn’t see where he was so I decided to be selfish and thankfully it went in.

“But now it’s all about making sure I build on this.”
