GARY Street has left his role as director of rugby at Basildon.

Street, who guided England’s Women team to World Cup glory last summer, took over the London Two North East side at the start of the season.

But he has now decided to depart after just three games in charge.

“I’m working in Oxford now and it’s been taking me more than three hours to get to training,” said Street.

“I tried to do it for a couple of weeks but it was just becoming too much.

“It’s a real shame but it was becoming unworkable.”

Basildon lost all three of Street’s games in charge and currently sit bottom of the table.

But Street is keen to see the side start to work their way back up the standings.

“I really wish them well for the rest of the season,” said the 46-year-old.

“I was really welcomed by the players and have had some really nice messages of support.

“I wish logistically we could have worked together for longer but I’ll definitely be down to watch a few games this season.”
