SOUTHEND United’s under 21 coach Kevin Maher heaped praise on his side despite suffering a 1-0 defeat at AFC Wimbledon this afternoon.

Egli Kaja bagged the only goal of the game to help Dons come out on top.

But Maher was pleased by how Blues’ youngsters got to grips with their more experienced opponents.

“I’m delighted with the boys,” said the former Shrimpers midfielder.

“We struggled a little bit early on as Wimbledon had a couple of first team strikers in their team and it took us a while to get to grips with us.

“After that we played some great stuff and it was unfortunate we just couldn’t nick the goal we needed to get a result.”
