BOWERS & PITSEA wrapped up the Essex Senior League title on a dramatic night to complete a memorable season in the club's history.

Rob Small’s team came from a goal down against Hullbridge Sports to win 2-1 and upset derby rivals Basildon United’s hopes of winning the championship.

Bowers secured promotion to the Ryman League on Monday night after beating Waltham Abbey 3-0, while Basildon had opted not to apply for promotion from the Essex Senior League.

But it was the Bees who looked set to take the crown when Shomari Barnwell put the Bees in front after just 10 minutes against Barking at Gardiners Lane.

Over at the Len Salmon Stadium Bowers dominated the first half against Hullbridge but were unable to find a breakthrough.

Instead it was Hullbridge who took the lead from the penalty spot early in the second half, before Barking equalised against Basildon in the 57th minute.

But Hullbridge were reduced to 10 men when Luke Hornsley was sent off for a second bookable offence and Small’s team soon took advantage by scoring from a corner.

And Bowers took the lead from the penalty spot through James Stevens.

Southend Manor bring down the curtain on their season tomorrow, looking to end the season having surpassed the 40 point mark.

Manor have struggled in recent weeks but have been markedly improved under manager Stuart Marshall since he took over at the start of the year.

And they may fancy their chances against Greenhouse Sports, who sit a place and two points above them in the standings with Marshall keen to finish well.

“This game was arranged at short notice so we have a few players away and therefore unavailable,” he said. “But it will be a good chance for some of the young players to show their quality. It is our last league game and we are looking forward to it and the summer break.”

Hullbridge Sports end their season at home against Tower Hamlets, although have a short turnaround having only played Bowers & Pitsea last night.
