BASILDON United were 2-0 winners against Sporting Bengal United as they made it back-to-back wins in the Essex Senior League.

The Bees were playing a side who were yet to begin their league campaign, while Basildon were in fine fettle after their 7-0 drubbing of Burnham Ramblers just days ago.

The first-half was a close affair, with the first goal not coming until the stroke of half-time. Nathan Dewberry scored it with one of the final kicks of the half.

And the second-half followed a similar pattern with little between the sides before the second goal came five minutes from time, Yaw Danso the scorer.

It was an afternoon of frustration for Hullbridge Sports as they were unable to break down Enfield 1893, who played 50 minutes with 10 men.

Matt Brinklow shot over early on before the red card five minutes before the break, Garry Matthew dismissed for a two-footed challenge on Dean Wallace.

Despite being a man light, Enfield kept Sports at bay for long periods with only half chances for the hosts.

The best chances came with eight minutes to go but top-scorer Luke Hornsley, who hit a hat-trick in midweek, saw his effort tipped onto the crossbar and away from danger.

Sports return to action tomorrow at Barking.

Southend Manor went down by a single goal to FC Romania.

Liviu Florin Pop scored the winner just 15 minutes from time, after a number of chances came and went for the hosts.

“I’m disappointed not to take something from the game,” he said. “We created enough chances in the game but didn’t take them. One piece of poor play resulted in us conceding a goal.

“We need to be more clinical and ruthless rather than being hopeful. A few harsh words were spoken afterwards.”
