SOUTHEND Saxons skipper Marcus Bloomberg remains frustrated by his side’s 34-12 defeat to table-topping Wimbledon on Saturday.

The Saxons were unable to condemn their visitors to their first defeat of the season.

But Bloomberg felt Southend should have come out on top at Warners Bridge.

“Reflecting back on the game I’m very frustrated and looking at the stats it’s hard to see how we lost,” said Bloomberg.

“We dominated their line-out, destroyed their scrum and had lots more ball position too.

“But I think them going down to 14 men and going to uncontested scrums really killed our momentum as our scrum was so dominant on our put in and theirs.”

However, Bloomberg also felt Southend contributed to their own downfall as they gifted Wimbledon too many of their points.

“We didn’t help ourselves and sometimes we are our own worst enemies,” said the hooker.

“We handed them a couple of tries through our own mistakes and we didn’t control the game enough in the red zone.

“Losing Tom Ashton and his kicking abilities due to an injury he suffered was just another thing that wasn’t in our favour on the day.

“But I think week by week we are getting stronger as a squad and the next couple of games are huge for us.

“I’m sure we will review the game this week and try and iron out a few of the kinks we seem to have.

“We need to push on to Guildford now and go down there and get five points to climb back up a few places in the league table.”

Southend - who are now ninth in the table - went behind to a converted try on Saturday before hitting back with summer signing Gary Andrews touching down for the second game in succession.

Ashton’s conversion levelled the scores before Wimbledon replied with two more tries, one of which came from an intercepted pass, to lead 19-7 before a penalty kick extended their advantage just before the break.

Wimbledon also scored first at the start of the second half before making it 34-7 with another well-worked effort.

But Southend had the final say when the fit-again Sam Fombo - who came off the bench in the second period - touched down for the game’s last try.

The Saxons - who have won two of their first four games - will now be looking to bounce back when they head to 11th-placed Guildford this weekend.

The Surrey side have won just once so far this season and were beaten 33-14 at Hertford on Saturday to leave them 11th in the table.
