SOUTHEND Lawn’s summer finals weekend proved to be a smash-hit success.

A number of entertaining encounters took place at the club’s Broadclyst Gardens base.

And club captain Graham Taylor was pleased to see so many good matches taking place.

“A large crowd of spectators were treated to some close games on both days of action while the weather remained fine throughout,” said Taylor.

“We had both girls and boys singles finals, adult doubles and singles finals and a super veterans final so it was busy but everyone enjoyed the matches.

Alex Lamprell won the men’s singles final against Jonathan Taylor while Crystal Smith beat Jo Day in the ladies final.

The men’s doubles final saw Tim Padbury and Graham Taylor beat Charlie and John Harris in a closely fought clash while Crystal Smith and Jo Day beat Sandy Bysouth and Viv Scanlon in the ladies doubles.

Crystal Smith and Alex Lamprell beat Sandy Bysouth and Jonathan Taylor in the mixed doubles and Nick Stuart saw off Paul Bhanji in the men’s singles plate competition.

In the men’s 60 plus doubles, Geoff Rhodes and Colin Smith beat David Barnes and Stewart Mills while the under boys singles final saw Harry Cossington beat Charlie Harris and Maddie Hines won the girls singles final against Sophia Hiller.

Head coach Charlie King said: “Both the junior singles finals were well contested with a high standard of tennis played with a good turn out to watch both events.”
