SOUTHEND United’s assistant manager Graham Coughlan wants more than just a good start from the Shrimpers against Fleetwood Town this afternoon.

Blues have yet to win at Roots Hall this term despite impressing in the opening exchanges of all three of their matches.

And Coughlan is keen to see a change this weekend.

“We’ve started well in all of our home games, which is good, but it’s how you finish off the matches that matters most,” said the Irishman.

“We took the lead in both games with Gillingham and were really on top at the start of the Bristol Rovers game too.

“We’ve been positive and on the front foot, which is something we’ve spoken about and worked on, but it’s counted for very little because we haven’t won the games.

“That’s what we want to do against Fleetwood but we’re going to need more than just a good start to do it.”

Blues were held to a 1-1 draw by Bristol Rovers at Roots Hall last weekend.

And Coughlan expects Fleetwood to also try and frustrate the Shrimpers with their tactics.

“Teams come to Roots Hall and show us respect by setting up defensively because we’re a good team with good players,” said Coughlan.

“But Fleetwood will be tough opponents for us as well.

“They’re tidy on the ball and shift it well.

“They like spending long periods in possession and we can’t afford to jump out of shape too early or they will punish us.”

However, Coughlan insists the Shrimpers are relishing the contest.

“We’re looking forward to it and it’s an opportunity for us to get some points on board,” said the 41-year-old.

“ If we get the win then it’s seven points from nine and a good little spell.”

Blues will again be without Michael Timlin (hamstring), Anthony Wordsworth (hamstring) and Nile Ranger (ankle).
